Criminals in Gloucestershire failing to stick to drug rehabilitation orders

This news article was extracted from This is Gloucestershire's website .

Criminals ordered to clean up their drug habit by courts fail to do so more than half the time.

Of 466 (drug rehabilitation) orders handed out by Gloucestershire courts since 2008, 257 have been broken or not completed.

Drug workers at the Gloucestershire Probation Trust say the figures, released under the Freedom of Information Act, do not tell the full story. Drug intervention manager, Ted Yates, said: "Revoking orders can be seen as a positive thing. We are often dealing with people whose lives are very chaotic and getting them back to prison can be a good thing. The rehabilitation orders enable us to keep a close eye on offenders"The percentage of orders broken has dropped from 68 per cent in 2008 to 61 per cent in 2009 and 36 per cent last year.

Police said it showed a new system, in which probation officers and police had joined forces with other agencies to manage offenders, was starting to have a positive effect.
