Drink Impaired Drivers

(DID)

Challenges drink drivers to accept responsibility for their offending and the consequences. DID can form part of a Community Order or a post-release prison licence.

Programme aims

  • To reduce drink driving
  • To increase public protection
  • To challenge offenders to accept responsibility for their offending and its consequences

Who is suitable?

Offenders who:

  • Pose a medium to high risk of harming the public through offending
  • Have one to four previous convictions for drink driving

DID is not suitable for:

  • First time offenders who were convicted with less than 3 times the alcohol limit
  • Those with five or more previous convictions for excess alcohol
  • Heavy drinkers

The programme involves:

  • Five individual sessions on risk assessment and group preparation
  • 14 weekly groupwork sessions. These focus on structured learning to develop pro-social skills, effective decision-making and detailed knowledge about the effects of drinking and driving
  • Five evaluation and relapse prevention sessions
  • Consistent monitoring and evaluation.
